Working with Graphs on the TI-84 Plus CE Python

This section explains how to customize graphs on your TI-84 Plus CE Python, including:

  • Changing line and feature colors
  • Drawing points directly on the graph
  • Adding background images
  • Using QuickPlot and Fit Equation to model data visually

Using Color on the TI-84 Plus CE Python

Your TI-84 Plus CE Python features a high-resolution color display, which allows you to customize the look of your graphs for better clarity and style.
Color can be applied in several areas:

  • Y= Editor — Choose line color and style for functions.
  • DRAW Commands — Apply colors to vertical lines, circles, and text.
  • Graph Format Screen — Change grid, axes, and border colors; apply background images or solid colors.
  • Statistical Plots — Assign unique colors for plot points and graphs.

Tip: Colors are selected using a spinner menu. With the cursor on a color box, press or to change the color.
A status bar hint often appears:

PRESS [<] OR [>] TO SELECT AN OPTION

Make sure to choose color combinations that keep all graph elements visible and easy to distinguish.

Resetting Color Settings to Default

  • In the Y= editor, highlight a function and press [Clear] to reset its color and style to default.
  • To reset all settings (including colors), press:
    [2nd][Mem]722

Changing Line Color in the Y= Editor

Example: Setting the function line to Magenta

  1. Press [Y=].
  2. Enter your equation (e.g., x^3 + 6).
  3. Use to highlight the color/style box next to the function.
  4. Press [Enter] to open the spinner dialog.
  5. Use repeatedly to highlight the color selector.
  6. Choose MAGENTA by scrolling with or and press [Enter].
  7. To change the line style, use or before pressing OK.
  8. Highlight OK and press [Enter].

Setting a Background Image

  1. Press [2nd][Format].
  2. Adjust GridColor, Axes, and BorderColor if desired.
  3. Highlight Background using the arrow keys.
  4. Press or to select a background color or an image variable (Image Var).

Your available images may differ from examples shown.

  • Press [Graph] to view the background with your plotted functions.

Note: To add new background images, use the free TI Connect™ CE software to convert and send pictures from your computer to the calculator.

Using QuickPlot and Fit Equation

QuickPlot and Fit Equation lets you:

  • Drop points directly on the graph
  • Fit a regression equation to those points
  • Customize color and line style
  • Save plotted points and store the resulting equation

Steps:

  1. Before starting, set your background image, colors, and other graph settings in the FORMAT screen.
  2. Adjust your viewing area using WINDOW or ZOOM settings.
  3. Access the feature from the [Calc] menu ([2nd][Trace]).
  4. Drop points on the graph screen — these can be saved to lists.
  5. The calculator will generate a regression curve and draw it on the graph.
  6. Store the resulting equation for later use.

Tip: You can align functions to match shapes in your background image using QuickPlot and the Fit Equation tool.
