Is the Online TI-84 Allowed on Tests? (SAT, ACT, AP)

No, not the online version.

The College Board and ACT allow the physical calculators during the SAT, ACT, and most AP exams. These are approved, non-CAS calculators.

Solving a Quadratic Equation

Problem: x squared plus 5x plus 6 equals 0.

  2. Enter x squared plus 5x plus 6.
  3. Press GRAPH.
  4. Press 2nd, then TRACE, to open CALC.
  5. Choose Zero.
  6. Move the cursor near the first root and press ENTER three times.
  7. Repeat near the second root.

Result: x equals negative 2 and x equals negative 3.

Graphing a Function

Problem: y equals x squared minus 4.

  2. Enter x squared minus 4.
  3. Press GRAPH.
  4. Use the arrow keys to trace the curve.

You will see the parabola cross the x-axis at 2 and negative 2.

Trigonometry (Degrees vs. Radians)

Problem: find sine of 30 degrees.

  1. Press MODE.
  2. Select Degree, not Radian.
  3. Press 2nd, then MODE, to return to the home screen.
  4. Type sin(30) and press ENTER.

Result: 0.5.

If your calculator is set to Radian instead of Degree, this same input gives a different, incorrect answer. Always check MODE first.

Linear Regression / Statistics

Problem: find the line of best fit for a small data set.

  1. Press STAT, then choose Edit.
  2. Enter x-values into L1 and y-values into L2.
  3. Press STAT again, then move to CALC.
  4. Choose LinReg(ax+b).
  5. Press ENTER.

The calculator returns the slope and intercept of your best fit line.

Solving a System of Equations with Matrices

Problem: solve two equations with two unknowns.

  1. Press 2nd, then x⁻¹, to open the Matrix menu (or press MATRIX on a CE model).
  2. Move to EDIT and choose a matrix name.
  3. Enter the dimensions, then fill in your coefficients.
  4. Repeat to build a second matrix for your constants.
  5. On the home screen, multiply the inverse of the first matrix by the second.

The result gives you the value of each variable.
