How to Graph on a TI-84 Plus CE
Graphing is the TI-84’s superpower. Once you learn how to graph on ti 84 calculators, homework gets much faster. This guide takes you from a blank screen to a finished graph in minutes.
Enter Your Function in Y=
Every graph starts in the Y= editor. If you are new to how to graph on ti 84 models, this is the screen to master.
Step 1: Press [Y=]. The function editor opens.
Step 2: Type your function next to Y1, for example 2X+3.
Step 3: Use [X,T,θ,n] to enter X quickly. It sits below the screen.
Your function is now stored. Time to draw it.
Draw the Graph
One keypress draws everything.
Step 1: Press [GRAPH]. The calculator plots your function.
Step 2: Look at the axes. The curve should be visible. Drawing runs left to right and takes a few seconds.
If you see a blank screen, do not worry. The next section fixes that.
Set the Viewing Window
A blank graph usually means a bad window. The calculator is plotting outside your view. Set the window yourself.
Step 1: Press [WINDOW]. You will see Xmin, Xmax, Ymin, Ymax.
Step 2: Set Xmin to -10 and Xmax to 10.
Step 3: Set Ymin to -10 and Ymax to 10.
Step 4: Press [GRAPH] again. Your function should appear.
For a quick fix, press [ZOOM] and choose 6:ZStandard. This sets the classic -10 to 10 window instantly.
Even faster: press [ZOOM] and choose 0:ZoomFit. The calculator keeps your X window. It then picks Y values that fit the graph.
Trace Values on the Curve
Trace lets you read exact points on your graph. It is perfect for checking homework.
Step 1: Press [TRACE]. A cursor jumps onto the curve.
Step 2: Use the left and right arrows to move along it.
Step 3: Read the X and Y values at the bottom of the screen.
Type a number and press [ENTER] to jump straight to that X value.
Graph Two Functions at Once
Comparing functions is easy. The TI-84 draws several at the same time.
Step 1: Press [Y=]. Enter your first function next to Y1.
Step 2: Enter your second function next to Y2.
Step 3: Press [GRAPH]. Both curves appear together.
To find where they cross, press [2nd][TRACE] for CALC. Choose 5:intersect. Follow the prompts.
Change the Graph Style
Make important curves stand out. The Y= editor controls line styles.
Step 1: Press [Y=]. Move left to the icon before Y1.
Step 2: Press [ENTER] to cycle through the styles. Pick the thick line.
Step 3: Press [GRAPH]. Your curve now draws bolder.
Use thick lines for final answers. Keep thin lines for helper graphs.
Graph Inequalities
Shade the region for inequalities like y < 2x + 1. The steps are almost the same as normal graphing.
Step 1: Press [Y=]. Enter your inequality.
Step 2: Move left to the icon before Y1. Press [ENTER] until you see the shade symbol.
Step 3: Press [GRAPH]. The solution region appears shaded.
Check Values With the Table
The table shows exact Y values for each X. It beats tracing for long lists.
Step 1: Press [2nd], then press [GRAPH] to open TABLE.
Step 2: Scroll up and down to read the values.
Step 3: Press [2nd][WINDOW] (TBLSET) to change the step size.
Set “Indpnt” to Ask if you want to type your own X values.
Find Minimums and Maximums
The CALC menu finds key points for you. No guessing needed.
Step 1: Press [2nd][TRACE] to open the CALC menu.
Step 2: Choose 3:minimum or 4:maximum.
Step 3: Move left of the point and press [ENTER]. Move right and press [ENTER]. Then guess near it and press [ENTER].
The calculator displays the exact coordinates on screen.
The same menu finds zeros. Choose 2:zero instead. Set a left bound and a right bound. Then guess near the crossing point.
Save Your Graph as a Picture
Need to reuse a graph later? Save it as a picture.
Step 1: Press [2nd][PRGM] to open the DRAW menu.
Step 2: Choose STO, then 1:StorePic.
Step 3: Type a number from 0 to 9. Press [ENTER].
Recall it anytime with 2:RecallPic from the same menu.
Graph Not Showing? Quick Fixes
Almost every graphing problem has a simple cause. Run through this list.
Check that Y= is turned on. Open [Y=]. Each function needs a highlighted equals sign. If it is not highlighted, move to it and press [ENTER].
Check your window. Press [ZOOM], then 6:ZStandard. A bad window hides most graphs.
Check the MODE. Press [MODE]. Make sure Func is selected, not Par or Pol. Wrong modes draw nothing useful.
Check for old plots. Press [2nd][Y=] for STAT PLOTS. Turn off any active plots. They can override your function graph. For a full sweep, choose 4:PlotsOff.
Check for a WINDOW RANGE error. This appears when Xmin is larger than Xmax. Open [WINDOW] and fix the order. The min value must always be smaller.
Check the split screen. Press [MODE]. Look at the last line. If G-T is selected, choose FULL instead. Split mode shrinks your graph to half the screen.
Fix stretched circles. Press [ZOOM] and choose 5:ZSquare. This gives true proportions. Circles look round instead of oval.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my graph blank?
The window is the usual cause. Press [ZOOM] and choose 6:ZStandard. Also check that your function is enabled in Y=.
How do I graph a second function?
Enter it next to Y2 in the [Y=] editor. Press [GRAPH]. Both functions draw together.
What does ZStandard do?
It resets the window to -10 to 10 on both axes. It is the fastest way to fix a blank graph.
How do I find where two graphs cross?
Press [2nd][TRACE], then choose 5:intersect. Select the first curve, then the second. Guess near the crossing point.
Can I zoom in on part of a graph?
Yes. Press [ZOOM] and choose 2:Zoom In. Move the cursor where you want, then press [ENTER].
How do I find where the graph crosses zero?
Press [2nd][TRACE], then choose 2:zero. Set a left bound and a right bound. Guess near the crossing point.
How do I switch to parametric mode?
Press [MODE]. Change FUNC to PAR or POL. Enter your equations in the Y= editor as usual.
Does graphing work the same on the online emulator?
Yes. The emulator runs the same system as a physical TI-84 Plus CE. Every key in this guide matches.
