Fractions and Decimals on the TI-84

The TI-84 Plus CE handles fractions with ease. It shows them like a textbook and converts them on command. This short guide covers fractions on ti 84 calculators from entry to conversion.

Enter Fractions the Easy Way

  1. Press [ALPHA], then [Y=]. This opens the FRAC menu.
  2. Choose n/d for a simple fraction.
  3. Type the numerator, arrow down, and type the denominator.
  4. Press the right-arrow key to step out of the fraction. Then press [ENTER].

That right-arrow step matters most. Skip it and your next keystrokes land inside the denominator. Every beginner hits this trap once.

Add and Subtract Fractions

Stack fractions before you compute. The template keeps everything clear.

  1. Open the fraction template with [ALPHA][Y=].
  2. Type the first fraction fully. Press the right arrow to exit it.
  3. Press the [+] key, then open a second template.
  4. Type the second fraction, exit with the right arrow, and press [ENTER].

The answer appears as a fraction when possible. Use >Frac if it shows a decimal.

Convert Answers with >Frac

Got a decimal but need a fraction? The >Frac command converts it.

  1. Type your calculation and get the decimal answer.
  2. Press [MATH], then press [ENTER] for 1:>Frac.
  3. Press [ENTER] again. The decimal becomes a fraction.

Example: 1 ÷ 8 gives 0.125. Run >Frac on it to get 1/8. This fails for decimals with no clean fraction form. The calculator then shows the decimal again.

Switch Between Mixed and Improper Fractions

The FRAC menu converts both ways. Open it with [ALPHA][Y=].

  • Pick the improper-to-mixed option to turn 7/3 into 2 1/3.
  • Run it again to flip back.

For mixed-number entry, choose the Un/d template. Type the whole number first, then the numerator and denominator.

Set How Answers Display

Tired of decimals when you want fractions? The MODE menu fixes it.

  1. Press [MODE].
  2. Arrow down to Answers.
  3. Choose FRAC-APPROX for fraction-style answers, DEC for decimals, or AUTO to let the calculator decide.

If your fractions keep turning into decimals, this setting is the cause. Set it once and forget it.

Control Decimals with Float and Fix

The same MODE menu handles decimal length.

  1. Press [MODE].
  2. Choose Float for full decimal answers.
  3. Choose a Fix number (like Fix 2) to round to that many places.

Fix 2 is handy for money. Float is best for science work where you need full precision. Press [2nd][MODE] to quit the menu.
