How to Solve Equations on a TI-84
Your TI-84 can solve many equations for you. You do not need to work through every step by hand. This guide shows how to solve equations on ti 84 calculators with three built-in tools.
Use the numeric solver for single equations. Use rref matrices for systems. Use graphing to check your work. Each method takes under a minute once you learn the keys.
Find the Numeric Solver
The numeric solver hides at the bottom of the MATH menu. It is easy to miss.
- Press [MATH] from the home screen.
- Press the up-arrow key once. This jumps to the last menu item.
- Select “Numeric Solver…” and press [ENTER]. Older models call it “Solver…”.
The solver screen shows two boxes, E1 and E2. They hold the two sides of your equation.
Solve with the E1 and E2 Boxes
Try the equation 3x + 5 = 20.
- Type 3x + 5 into the E1 box. Press [X,T,θ,n] to type X.
- Arrow down to E2 and type 20.
- Press [GRAPH]. This selects the OK button.
- The screen now shows X and a guess value. Press [GRAPH] again to solve.
The top of the screen reads “Solution is marked”. The true value sits next to X. Here x = 5.
Ignore the bound line for now. It reads bound={-1e99,1e99}. That is just the search range.
Find Every Solution
The solver returns one answer per run. It picks the solution nearest your guess. The X value on screen before solving is that guess.
For x² = 9, a guess of 1 gives x = 3. A guess of -1 gives x = -3. Change the guess to hunt down each root.
Equations with endless solutions just echo your guess back. That tells you every number works.
Know the Solver’s Limits
The solver is strong but not magic. Keep these limits in mind.
- One variable only. It cannot solve systems with x and y together.
- Answers may be slightly off. It might show 2.9999999789 instead of 3. Round it.
- No sign change near the guess causes ERR: NO SIGN CHNG. Enter a closer guess.
Try the Solve( Function Instead
The catalog holds a second solver. Some students prefer it.
- Press [2nd][0] to open the CATALOG.
- Press [LN] to jump to the S section. Scroll to Solve( and press [ENTER].
- Type Solve(expression, variable, guess). The expression must equal zero.
Example: to solve x/2 + 5 = -2x, first rewrite it as x/2 + 5 + 2x = 0. Then type Solve(X/2+5+2X,X,1). A smart guess finds each root, just like the numeric solver.
Solve Systems of Equations with rref
A system has two or more equations with shared variables. The fastest TI-84 method is rref, short for reduced row-echelon form. It uses matrices.
Example system:
2x + 3y = 12
x − y = 1
- Press [2nd], then [x⁻¹] to open the MATRIX menu.
- Arrow right to EDIT and press [ENTER]. Select matrix [A].
- Set the size to 2 rows by 3 columns. The extra column holds the answers.
- Type the numbers row by row: 2, 3, 12, then 1, −1, 1.
- Press [2nd], then [MODE] to return to the home screen.
- Press [2nd][x⁻¹] again. Arrow to MATH and choose B:rref(.
- Press [2nd][x⁻¹], select [A], close the bracket, and press [ENTER].
The screen shows the solved matrix. Read x and y from the last column. Here x = 3 and y = 2. Check: 2(3) + 3(2) = 12. Correct.
Store an Equation to Reuse It Later
You can store an equation in a Y variable. This helps when you test many values or graph the result.
- Press [Y=] and type your equation into Y1.
- To reuse it, press [VARS], choose Y-VARS, then Function, then Y1.
- The calculator pastes Y1 into your current line.
Stored equations also work with graphs. Press [GRAPH] to see the line or curve at once.
Check Your Answer by Graphing
Graphs give a fast visual check. Store each side of the equation in Y1 and Y2.
- Press [Y=]. Type the left side into Y1 and the right side into Y2.
- Press [GRAPH], then [2nd][TRACE] → 5:intersect.
- Follow the prompts and press [ENTER] three times.
The calculator marks the crossing point. Compare it with your solver answer. They should match.
Fix Common Solver Errors
ERR: NO SIGN CHNG means no sign change near your guess. Type a guess closer to the real answer.
ERR: SYNTAX means a typing slip. Check brackets and minus signs. Use the negative key (−), not subtract, for negative numbers.
Wrong answer on trig? Check DEG vs RAD in [MODE]. In radian mode, sin(30) gives 0.988 instead of 0.5. This is the most common “wrong answer” complaint.
Slightly-off decimals? The solver approximates. Round 2.9999999789 to 3.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the TI-84 solve quadratic equations?
Yes. Open the numeric solver with [MATH], then up-arrow. Type each side into E1 and E2. Press [GRAPH] twice. It returns one root per run, so change the guess for the second root.
Why does the solver only give me one answer?
It returns the solution nearest your starting guess. Type a different guess and solve again to find other roots.
What does “Solution is marked” mean?
It confirms the solver finished. The value next to X is your answer.
Can I solve equations with two variables using the solver?
No. The numeric solver handles one variable only. Use the rref matrix method for systems.
Why is my answer 2.9999999789 instead of 3?
The solver uses numeric approximation. Round the result to the exact value.
Do these steps work on the free online TI-84?
Yes. Every method for how to solve equations on ti 84 hardware works on our free emulator. No download or signup is needed.
