TI-84 Programming Guide for Beginners

Your TI-84 is more than a calculator. It runs small programs written in TI-BASIC. This guide shows how to program ti 84 calculators from zero, with your first working example.

No coding background is needed. If you can type on the keypad, you can write a program.

Create Your First Program

Programs live under the [PRGM] key. Follow these steps to start one.

  1. Press [PRGM], arrow right to NEW, and press [ENTER].
  2. Type a name up to 8 letters long, then press [ENTER].
  3. You are now in the program editor. Type your commands here.
  4. Press [2nd][MODE] to save and quit when done.

Program names cannot start with a number. Pick a short, clear name like DOUBLE or QUIZ1. Reusing a name opens the old program for editing.

Write a Simple Example: Prompt and Display

This program asks for a number and shows its double. Type it exactly as shown.

:Prompt A
:Disp "DOUBLE IS",2*A

How to type it:

  1. In the editor, press [PRGM], choose I/O, then 2:Prompt. Type A.
  2. On the next line, press [PRGM] → I/O → 3:Disp.
  3. Type the quote with [ALPHA][+], then DOUBLE IS, then close the quote.
  4. Type a comma, then 2*A. Use [x] for the times sign.

The colon at each line start appears on its own. You do not type it.

Run and Edit Your Program

Running a program takes two key presses.

  1. Press [PRGM] and select your program from the list.
  2. Press [ENTER] twice. The program runs at once.

To change a program, press [PRGM], arrow to EDIT, and pick it. Fix the lines you want, then quit with [2nd][MODE]. Run it again to test. Test after every small change. Small tests catch errors early.

Stop a Frozen Program

Infinite loops freeze the screen. Beginners hit this often. The fix is one key.

Press [ON]. The calculator breaks out of the loop and shows an error screen. Choose 2:Goto to jump to the faulty line. Check your loop condition. It must turn false at some point.

Add a Loop to Your Programs

Loops repeat actions without extra typing. The For loop is the easiest to learn.

:For(X,1,5)
:Disp X
:End
  1. In the editor, press [PRGM] → CTL → 4:For(.
  2. Type X,1,5 and close the bracket.
  3. Add :Disp X on the next line.
  4. Close with [PRGM] → CTL → 7:End.

Run it. The screen shows 1 2 3 4 5. Change the numbers to count higher.

Make Decisions with If

If statements let programs react to input.

:Prompt A
:If A>10
:Disp "BIG"

Type :If from [PRGM] → CTL → 1:If. The program shows BIG only when A tops 10. Combine If with loops for simple games and quizzes.

Send Programs to and from Your Computer

TI Connect CE moves programs between your calculator and computer. It is free from Texas Instruments and works on Windows and Mac.

  1. Install TI Connect CE and plug in your calculator with a USB cable.
  2. Open the Calculator Explorer tab in the software.
  3. Drag .8xp program files onto your calculator’s name to send them.
  4. Drag programs off the calculator to back them up.

Download ready-made programs from Cemetech or ticalc.org. Many are free. Check that each program matches your model before sending it.

Archive vs. Delete Programs

Programs use memory. Two options keep things tidy.

Archive a program to protect it from a RAM reset. Press [2nd][+], choose 2:Mem Mgmt/Del, then 7:Prgm. Press [ENTER] on the program to add an asterisk (archived).

Delete a program you no longer need. In the same menu, arrow to the program and press [DEL]. Confirm with 2:Yes.

Archived programs still run fine. They just survive memory clears.

Programs vs. Apps: Know the Difference

Programs live under [PRGM]. They are small files you write or download as .8xp. Apps live under the [APPS] button. They are larger Flash files (.8xk) like Cabri or PlySmlt2.

You cannot run an app from the PRGM menu. If a download will not launch, check which button it belongs under.

A Note on Python

Newer TI-84 Plus CE calculators can run Python with TI’s Python app. This needs the app installed on a physical calculator. Our free online emulator does not include the Python app. For Python practice, use a physical CE with the app from TI’s website.

Frequently Asked Questions

What language do TI-84 programs use?

TI-BASIC. It is a simple language built into every TI-84. No extra software is needed.

How do I debug a program that gives wrong answers?

Add :Disp lines to show variable values at each stage. Add :Pause to freeze the screen and read them. Remove these lines when done.

Why do I get ERR:SYNTAX when I run my program?

A command is typed wrong. Press [ON] to break, choose 2:Goto, and check the flagged line. Missing quotes and brackets cause most errors.

Can I share programs with a friend?

Yes, with a link cable between two physical calculators. Press [2nd][X,T,θ,n] for LINK, choose Send, and pick the program.

How many programs can I store?

It depends on free memory. Most class programs are tiny. Dozens fit without trouble.

Do programs work on the free online TI-84?

The emulator runs the calculator system, but file transfer is limited. Learn the steps here, then run them on a physical calculator.
